A guru, a student, and one flame between them
Guru–shishya parampara is the oldest teaching method we have: one person who knows, one person who wants to, and years of patient correction between them.
What parampara means
Not a syllabus. A relationship.
Guru means the one who removes darkness. Shishya means the one who is ready to receive. Parampara is the unbroken line the two of them make together — and none of it was ever written down and posted on. It was shown, corrected, shown again, and released only once the student could carry it without the teacher in the room.
That is why a dancer is always named alongside their Guru. It is not a credential. It says who sat with them, who corrected them, and who is answerable for how the form is passed on next.

The bond
Two people, one responsibility
Guru–shishya parampara is often described as a chain of names. It is really a relationship between two people, and it only holds because both of them carry weight in it.
What the Guru gives
- Time
- Not a scheduled slot, but as long as the correction takes. The same adavu, shown again on a hundredth morning without impatience.
- Honest correction
- A Guru who only praises has stopped teaching. The willingness to say what is still wrong is the whole gift.
- The whole form
- Nothing withheld, nothing kept back as the teacher's private advantage — including the parts the student is not ready for yet.
What the Shishya gives
- Shraddha
- Trust enough to try the thing you have not yet understood, before you have decided whether you agree with it.
- Practice
- The Guru can only show. What is shown becomes yours through repetition — daily, unglamorous, long after anyone is watching.
- Continuation
- Nothing received here belongs to one dancer. What you were given is held in trust for whoever asks you to teach them next.
